Senator Cherargei files motion to withdraw Uhuru's retirement benefits and allowances

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has presented a motion in the Senate seeking to withdraw or reduce the retirement benefits and allowances given to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The lawmaker argues that the retired president has not followed the rules set out in the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act. According to Cherargei, continued political involvement by Uhuru goes against the requirement for former leaders to remain neutral after leaving office.

The senator claims that Uhuru Kenyatta has taken part in partisan activities, including making public statements that appear to support or oppose certain political sides. He also mentioned mobilization efforts linked to ongoing political matters in different parts of the country. These actions, Cherargei says, lower the respect that should surround the office of a retired president and question the need for public funds to support such benefits.

In the motion, the senator is calling for a thorough review of the benefits. He wants the Office of the Auditor-General to examine how the resources have been used and report back to Parliament within sixty days. If the claims are proven, Cherargei proposes that the benefits could be revoked, reduced, or redirected to help ordinary Kenyans. He stresses the importance of accountability when spending public money.

This development comes shortly after Uhuru Kenyatta made remarks defending his right to speak out and support his Jubilee Party. Some leaders from the ruling side have criticised his recent activities, while supporters of the former president argue that he still has the freedom to express his views. The motion is expected to spark lively discussions in the Senate as lawmakers weigh the balance between respect for retired leaders and the rules governing their conduct.
