Sifuna Protests Wetang’ula’s Decision to Extend Kibagendi’s Suspension

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has strongly protested the decision by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to suspend Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi for an additional 14 days. This happened despite a court order that had reinstated the MP to Parliament.

Sifuna criticised the Speaker’s action, saying it shows disrespect for the court’s ruling. He argued that once a court has ordered the MP’s return, Parliament should obey the order instead of extending the suspension. The senator described the move as defiance of the judiciary and an attempt to silence dissenting voices in the House.

Kibagendi was first suspended indefinitely on February 17, 2026, after he claimed in a television interview that Parliament had been “auctioned” and turned into an appendage of State House. He accused the Speaker and his deputy of undermining the independence of the House. The High Court later issued conservatory orders suspending that indefinite ban and ordered his immediate reinstatement.

However, Speaker Wetang’ula has now extended the suspension by another 14 days. Sifuna described the move as defiance of the court ruling and an attempt to silence MPs who speak out. He questioned why Parliament continues to act against a clear court order. The latest suspension has sparked fresh debate about the relationship between Parliament and the Judiciary, with concerns over respect for the rule of law and separation of powers.
