Boda Boda Riders in Luanda Reject Ban on Funeral Processions

Motorcycle taxi operators in Luanda have strongly opposed a recent ban on using boda bodas in funeral processions.

The riders say the restriction interferes with long-standing local traditions and should be lifted immediately. They argue that riding in funeral convoys is an important way for the community to show respect and support grieving families.

A representative of the riders, Olenyo, explained that funeral processions form a key part of mourning culture in the area. According to him, many families and friends rely on boda bodas to accompany the deceased from the church or home to the burial ground. He noted that banning such processions would deny people a meaningful way to participate in farewell rites that have been practiced for generations.

The protest highlights growing tension between local customs and efforts by authorities to improve road safety and traffic flow. The boda boda riders are calling on county officials to engage with them in dialogue so that a solution can be found that respects both cultural practices and the need for orderly funerals in Luanda.
