Students at St. Mary's Kibabii National School Protest Principal's Transfer

Learners at St. Mary's Kibabii National School in Bungoma County held a dramatic nighttime protest on Monday, February 23, 2026, voicing strong opposition to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)'s decision to transfer their Chief Principal, Nicodemus Ogeto
The students demanded an immediate reversal of the move, which relocates him to Riokindo Boys High School in Kisii County. The unrest escalated as some learners tried to exit the school grounds and head into surrounding areas, prompting authorities to step in.
The demonstration highlighted widespread appreciation for Principal Ogeto, whom students and supporters credit with elevating the school's academic standards and reputation. Under his guidance, the institution has achieved consistent strong performances in KCSE exams, establishing itself as a leading national school in the Western region. The timing of the transfer has drawn particular criticism, as it coincides with preparations for important academic and extracurricular commitments, leading students to view the change as disruptive and unwarranted.
Police from Bungoma Police Station were called to the scene and used tear gas to disperse the crowd and prevent the protest from spreading into public streets. While some students reportedly broke out of the compound, the situation was eventually brought under control. The school has since welcomed Dr. Geoffrey Murunga, previously from Goseta High School, as the new principal, though no official statements from authorities or the administration have addressed the underlying concerns or protest resolution. Some parents expressed worry over the incident, noting risks to student safety and potential damage to the school's respected image.
