Trans Nzoia Doctors Issue 14-Day Strike Notice Over Unpaid Dues.

Doctors in Trans Nzoia County have issued a formal 14-day strike notice to the county government, warning of an impending withdrawal of services starting midnight on February 17, 2026, unless their long-standing grievances are fully resolved.

The notice, dated February 3, 2026, was sent by Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah to County Secretary Truphosa Amere. In the letter, the union described the situation as extremely urgent and accused the county administration of repeatedly ignoring its legal and contractual responsibilities.

According to KMPDU, the county has violated key laws and agreements, including the Employment Act, Labour Relations Act, the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for doctors, and the relevant Schemes of Service. The union highlighted several specific unfair labour practices that doctors have faced for an extended period.

Among the main complaints are:

-A discriminatory promotion process that excluded around 20 doctors despite their eligibility.

-The complete absence of a working medical cover scheme for healthcare workers, leaving them vulnerable to financial and health risks while on duty.

-Failure to deduct and remit more than Ksh. 1 million in union dues.

-Refusal to upgrade 12 doctors from contract-based roles to permanent and pensionable terms.

Dr. Atellah stressed that the union had made multiple efforts to settle the issues through dialogue, but the county's ongoing inaction left them with no choice but to escalate. The notice demands that all listed issues be comprehensively addressed within the 14-day window. While the union expressed willingness for sincere, time-bound talks, it made clear it would no longer tolerate empty assurances without concrete action.

If the county fails to comply, KMPDU warned that all doctors in Trans Nzoia will down tools, potentially causing major disruptions to public healthcare services in the region. This development comes amid recurring labour tensions in the county's health sector.
