Workers at Bungoma Smart City Project Stage Protest Over Unpaid Wages

Just days after President William Ruto visited the ongoing Smart City project in Kanduyi, Bungoma County, workers on the site have downed their tools.
The employees claim they have not received their salaries for the past three weeks. This development has brought construction activities to a halt and raised fresh questions about the management of the ambitious housing and urban development initiative.
Led by Anthony Masika Makokha and Antony Omuse, the protesting workers have voiced strong concerns not only about the delayed payments but also about the abrupt dismissal of some colleagues by the main contractor. They allege that the contractor owes them more than 15,000 shillings in unpaid dues. The group says their repeated complaints to the project management have gone unanswered, forcing them to take stronger action to demand what they are owed.
In their appeal, the workers are now calling on President William Ruto to personally intervene and resolve the matter. They argue that the current supervisors have failed to address their grievances despite the high-profile nature of the project. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring timely payments and fair treatment for casual labourers involved in major government-backed developments across the country.
